- ItemA corpus-based approach to the linguistic features in Nigerian and American presidential speeches(Journal of Linguistics, Language and Culture, 2016) Asomwan S. Adagbonyin; Isaiah Aluya; Samuel EdemPrevious studies on political discourse in Nigeria have dwelt on the application of manual approaches to the analysis of political speeches with little or no attention on a corpus-based approach. This study aims to demonstrate the viability of a corpus-based approach to the analysis of political speeches. Using two sets of different speeches of Nigerian and American Presidents as its database, the study explores the sorts of linguistic features revealed by a corpus-based approach, the differences in both speakers’ usage of these linguistic features and how effectively they were used for communicative purpose. The results through the Wmatrix software show the following linguistic features: pronominal reference, nominalization, negation/contracted negation, Saxon genitives and repetition. The study concludes that both set of speeches rhetorically employ these features to distinctively enhance their language and give extra weight to their messages. Obama’s overuse of pronouns, negation/contracted negation and Saxon genitive shows that he presented himself as more informal, interactive and conversational than Jonathan, while Jonathan’s overuse of nominalization (elaborate noun phrase) and repetition presented him as formally inclined.

- ItemManagement of Life after Retirement and Its Implication on Retired Academic Librarians in Edo State, Nigeria(International Journal of Humanities and Social Science, 2015-10-10) OBINYAN, O.O.Management of life after retirement entails planning for the unpredictable and unavoidable new life style when one withdraws from active service. The need to plan, adopt and implement strategies to ease the pain and problems associated with life after retirement, cannot be overemphasized. The rationale for this study is to examine the management of life after retirement and its implication on retired academic librarians in Edo State, Nigeria. Survey method was adopted and two hundred (200) questionnaires were randomly administered to retired professional and non professional librarians in Edo state, Nigeria. Data collected were categorized and coded. The data were analyzed using simple percentage and Chi Square statistical techniques. The study revealed that most of the retirees retired as a result of their attainment of the prescribed length of service or age limit, that librarians prepare for their retirement through monthly contribution to specific pension schemes, maintaining a personal savings fixed deposit account with a bank, investing in skills acquisition and training, ownership of property, investment in shares and stocks and insurance policy. The implication of not preparing for retirement is that after retirement, the retiree will be unhappy, dejected, feeling of inferiority complex as a retiree, low self esteem in the community, regrettedretiring from Public Service and inability to contribute to the society. Furthermore, the study showed that there are inadequate government retirement programmes equipping librarians in terms of ability to plan and set up new business after retirement, in order to take care of them self and family and there is significant difference between life after retirement and life during service years. The study recommended that librarians should be encouraged to invest in assets and financial ventures so that at retirement, they can earn additional income from these assets and financial ventures to supplement their pension income and they should embark on continuous education and skills acquisition and training as a way of preparing for life after retirement.

LIS academics face the challenges of heavy workload, inadequate experience, and lack of knowledge of relevant scholarly publishing outlets, and increasing rate of electronic journals due to advancement in ICT among others. To overcome the challenges, incentives should be provided to motivate LIS academics to engage in scholarly publishing, sponsorship of LIS academics to attend international conference to gain confidence, knowledge and experience on scholarly publishing, allocate money for staff to support their scholarly publishing, a compilation of a unified standard list of journals that should be a guide on where to get published.

- ItemSurvey of users’ level of satisfaction toward inclusive management and marketing of library service in Nigeria(2021) Oluwatoyin ObinyanAim: Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) brought significant innovation and improvement to library services and methods of meeting user needs. Assessment of user satisfaction with the various library services is an important variable toward inclusive library management and marketing of library services in the 21st century. With the application of ICTs bringing about different resources and various accessibility modes (print and online), it became necessary to investigate user satisfaction with various available library resources and services. Methods: The study addressed user satisfaction using adapted customer satisfaction scores (CSAT) metric with Rodski Survey to elicit information from 560 respondents that visited the library within the space of one week. The questionnaire was given to the respondents during their library visit twice daily for one week and the process excluded those that have filled the questionnaire before. Results: The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed the level of user satisfaction to be average. It was also discovered that the resources in the library did not meet their information needs as the majority responded that the resources are inadequate and the overall assessment of their interaction with librarians is excellent despite the inadequate resources. Conclusion: Based on the findings, recommendations were made to create a holistic marketing strategy to improve usability of the library, to acquire more resources and funding to meet user expectations, and to address the need for adequate management of library resources.
